LG Math

About Joe

The person behind LG Math.

I'm Joe, and I started LG Math because I believe every child can succeed in math — they just need the right support. Too many kids decide they're "not a math person" before they've had the chance to learn in a way that works for them.

I've spent over 10 years coaching children ages 5–12, and I've seen firsthand how the right approach can transform a child's relationship with math. It starts with meeting them where they are, building on what they know, and celebrating every step forward.

My background is a bit unconventional for a tutor. I studied Economics and History at Yale, earned my MBA from UCLA Anderson, and hold the CFA designation. I've worked as a startup CFO and spent years in the analytical world of finance. But my real passion has always been working with kids — coaching Math Champions teams, volunteering in classrooms, and now tutoring to help fill the gaps I see in the local math curriculum.

I'm also a parent of two elementary-age children, so I understand the challenges and joys of this stage from both sides. When I work with your child, I bring the same patience, encouragement, and high expectations I bring to my own kids.

My Teaching Philosophy

Meet them where they are

Every child starts in a different place. I assess their skills honestly and build from there — no rushing, no skipping steps.

Make it make sense

I don't teach tricks or shortcuts. I help kids understand WHY math works, so they can solve new problems independently.

Build confidence, not dependence

My goal is for your child to not need me anymore. I'm teaching them how to think, not just how to get the right answer.

Keep it human

Sessions should feel safe and even fun. I celebrate effort, normalize mistakes, and keep the tone positive.
